(01/09/09 – Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)

Melissa B. Gray, 29, a former teacher at Little Flower Catholic School in Mobile, Alabama has been arrested on allegations that she traded child pornography with a Florida man and tried to arrange sexual encounters for him with two children, one of them a family member.

Melissa B. Gray

Allegedly Gray’s arrest Gray pre-empted plans for her and Milton resident Jonathan Daniel Bervig to have sex this weekend with one of the children, the male family member’s friend, an 8-year-old girl.

An affidavit filed by an Alabama Bureau of Investigation agent indicates that Gray met Bervig in an online chat room and discussed sexual fantasies involving children.

It is alleged that Bervig had visited Gray’s house several times, including an initial visit in which the two had sex. It is further alleged that about a month ago Gray tried to set up a sexual liaison with Bervig, a 7-year-old family member and a female friend of the child.

It is also alleged that Gray gave Benadryl to the two children at her house, then told Bervig to come so that they could “play” with the children. Reportedly Bervig drove to Gray’s house, but left because the children were still awake. He told authorities that Gray was angry that the children had not fallen asleep. Subsequently it is alleged that Gray and Bervig discussed drugging the child with Percocet for the alleged plans for the upcoming weekend.

Gray and Bervig face child pornography charges. Gray is being held in the Mobile County Metro Jail until a federal magistrate judge will decide whether to grant her pre-trial release.

Bervig, who was arrested Tuesday and an investigator from Florida assumed Bervig’s identity online and contacted Gray. She told him during the instant messaging chat that she wanted Bervig to come to her house. Alabama authorities, following Bervig’s statements, obtained a search warrant for Gray’s home on Tuesday. She initially said she had not had any chats about engaging in sex with children, according to the affidavit, but then admitted that she had after officers confronted her with chat logs.

08/20/09 – Melissa Gray To Stand Trial

A federal judge says Melissa B. Gray is mentally fit to stand trial on allegations of drugging two children and offering them to a Florida man for sex.

09/17/09 – Melissa Gray Reportedly To Enter “Blind Plea”

According to a report published on al.com:

Melissa B. Gray will enter a so-called “blind plea” to possession and distribution of child pornography charges, meaning that she will get no promise of a lenient sentencing recommendation from federal prosecutors in Mobile. U.S. Magistrate Judge Katherine “Kit” Nelson scheduled a Sept. 23 change of plea hearing.

If Gray does follow through with the plea, she will face a sentencing range of between 5 and 12 1/2 years in federal prison.
