Guilty

(11/03/08 – Initial BadBadTeacher.com Report)

Brian Coar, 25, a former math teacher at Whippany Park High School pleaded guilty today to a charge of child endangerment in a case where he was charged as the result of an “inappropriate relationship” with a 17-year-old student between September 2007 and February of this year, when the student turned 18.

Coar’s plea will be dismissed once he completes three years in a pre-trial intervention program and does 200 hours of community service.

Reportedly Coar and the student only began a sexual relationship after she turned 18 in February, so he wasn’t charged with a sexual crime. The prosecutor said that Coar and the girl researched the law regarding when sexual relations between them would no longer be a crime.

Coar surrendered his teaching certificate and promised never to pursue a job in education as part of the plea deal.

Reportedly Coar came to the attention of authorities in May and was charged on October 20 with child endangerment on the basis that engaged in a “personal relationship” with the student and failed to uphold his professional relationship with her while he was her teacher.

This guy was a fantastic math teacher, and I wound up getting screwed by this little fiasco, I signed up for pre-calculus thinking I would get him as a teacher, but seeing as he got the boot, I wound up with a rather ditsy first year pre-calc teacher who can’t seem to teach anything.

I’d just like to state that Mr. Coar is currently still dating his former student, and they are both quite happy together. Unfortunately, his bad judgement at the time is the story here…

Desperado..I really hope you read this…your comment is the pure definition of moronic. Do you know why the age of consent in NJ (and most other areas in this world) is 16? Because by then THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE GETTING INTO!! This isn’t a story of brainwashing…this is a story of a kid, who stupidly fell for his student. This “tough on crime” approach is not working (shocker…it’s been so effective against the war on drugs–i’m being sarcastic). The fact is, to lump guys like Mr. Coar into the same category as “predators” who molest prepubescent children is utterly rediculous. The feild of psychology recognizes pedophilia as a disease…NOT ephebophilia. Why? BECAUSE FEMALE ARE PHYSICALLY MATURED BY 16…which means they can bear children…which means that it is a biological reaction to fine them attractive. Now, society on the otherhand, sets up boundries (some are unfounded)…nonetheless, we must live by these boundries. What this man is guilty of is NOT being a “preditor”, but being stupid enough to ignore these boundries. Here’s a fact (I’m guessing you might not know this desparado) but as soon as a female reaches child-bearing age, she instinctively becomes attracted to those who can offer stability. Thus, without the teacher (who is easily seen as a man who is stable) “manipulating” the student, she is attracted to him. Bottom line: how can you honestly compare a pedophile to this guy? EVEN A PSYCHOLOGIST WOULDN’T.

You’ve got to be kidding me here! What planet do you come from Peter Rabbit??
Get that head of your’s out of the wabbit hole dude!
This falls into the “child preditor” category without a doubt. The same should be true of all teachers, clergy, police/fire, doctors etc… Anyone who is in a position to use there authority to overpower a child physically, mentally or emotionally.

In this particular case, I don’t care if Mr. Coar is Mr. Kotter and Mr. Holland combined!!!
He used his superiority to take over the mind of a child. The fact that he sucked her in and when she eventually turned 18 was legal isn’t the point at all here.

One day may Peter Wabbit have a daughter and have this same situation occur.
Let’s see if he still finds that teacher to be “Cool”, Hip” or “The greatest teacher ever”?

It appears I have a follower. Peter Rabbit #2 is going to upset several others who are angry with me for speaking the truth and calling it like it is.

  6. Peter Rabbit #2 says:

this is a lie….he is definitely not a bad teacher
    AWESOME TEACHER the best ever….
btw he is a great math teacher
why make him guilty if he’s done everything legal
    dude, terrible judgment

  7. A Good Teacher says:

Peter Rabbit – once again I find myself agreeing with you. Somewhat. So they are claiming that his “personal” and non-sexual relationship with the girl prior to her turning 18 is a crime? Child Endangerment? He was responsible enough to educate himself on the law and obeyed the law, waiting until the girl was 18 to begin a sexual relationship with her. Apparently there is no criminal statute that forbids teachers from having sex with adult students so this a real stretch.

I do take issue with a Teacher being in a relationship with someone who is currently a student even if they are an adult. The imbalance of power and the influence the teacher has over the student can lead to an unhealthy relationship and overall, is unprofessional.

  8. Peter Rabbit says:

I don’t see a crime here even if he was the girl’s teacher. It’s the same as a school administator involved with a teacher, which happens more that you may think. Or even an employer or manager involved with an employee.
