Barry Valentine, 35, a music teacher at Orchard Hollow and Sterling Morton elementary schools in Mentor, Ohio has been arrested on allegations of sexually assaulting a female student two years ago.
On Monday, Valentine was arraigned on a rape charge in Mentor Municipal Court. Bond for Valentine was set in the amount of $300,000.
It is alleged that Valentine first attacked the then 15-year-old girl in a room at Memorial Junior High School in 2007 during a summer band camp for elementary and middle-school students at which Valentine was an adviser.
It is further alleged that Valentine coerced the girl into a sexual relationship with other sexual assaults taking place at Valentine’s home. Investigators say that the alleged illicit relationship existed for a period of six months to seven months.
Valentine came to the attention of authorities after the alleged victim, now a senior at Mentor High School, told her boyfriend of the alleged sexual assaults and her urged her to tell her parents who in turn contacted authorities.
Valentine was arrested on Friday and police are urging anyone who may have any information about other possible victims should contact authorities.
10/22/09 – Guilty Plea
Barry Valentine has reportedly pleaded guilty to 16 counts of sexual battery.
Sentencing is set for December 7th and Valentine faces a maximum of 80 years in prison.

I had that guy for music a few years ago…God that Effed up.
This guy was my all-star band teacher.
He constantly insisted on me calling him and IMing me on yahoo messenger. He always insisted on coming to see me and meeting me while i visited my dad in Painsville ohio. I’m scared out of my mind.
The fact of whether or not this teacher is a “good guy”, has nothing to do with it! What he did was wrong! It doesn’t matter if this girl concented or not. You do not have a relationship with a 15 year old CHILD! Kids do make poor choices sometimes, that is why we, as adults, are there to guide in making the right choice. I too knew Mr. Valentine. I also thought he was a good guy, but you can’t keep that title when you make choices like this!! If he is found innocent, then I’m sorry for his misfortune, but if he’s guilty, then I feel really terrible for the little girl who not only endured this abuse, but carried it alone for so long! What a tradgedy! Parents, please talk to your children.
Barry is a good guy. i hope the young lady has adequate support

In high school Barry was one of my classmates, a nice guy and a model student. Something happened to him and it’s very unfortunate. I’m very sad to see this news.
This school system has major problems. This is the third incident in less then a year. However the first involving a male teacher. The other two were female. One now doing time and the other allowed to resign.
This guy was my teacher first through third grade. He was always wierd, we actually thought he was gay later on; guess not now. The police also found marijuana in his apartment and are charging him with drug abuse.
