Amanda Marie Athey Arrested
Posted by: Webmaster in English Teachers, FE-FV, High Schools, North CarolinaAmanda Marie Athey, 27, of Harrisburg, North Carolina, a former 9th grade English teacher at Hopewell High School in Huntersville has turned herself in and been arrested on allegations that she had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old female student.

Athey turned herself in to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office after four warrants were issued for her arrest.
Athey is charged with three counts of indecent liberties between a teacher and a student and one count of sexual activity between a teacher and a student.
Following her arrest Athey was released on $4,000 bond.
Athey came to the attention of authorities owing to the student’s father becoming suspicious of his daughter’s friendship with a teacher and there after began recording his 16-year-old’s phone calls with the teacher. Phone calls in which it is alleged that his daughter and the teacher were talking about their sexual relationship.
Athey who taught English at Hopewell High School for three years resigned yesterday.
Her next court appearance is set for Tomorrow.
Update 8/09/07:
Of the four charges Athey faces, two are in Cabarrus County for incidents that allegedly happened at her Harrisburg home and two are in Mecklenburg County for incidents that allegedly happened at the teenager’s home in Cornelius.
Athey is scheduled to be in a Mecklenburg County courtroom on Monday and a Cabarrus County courtroom on August 30.
Update 8/31/07:
Amanda Athey’s attorney appeared in her behalf today and waived a probable cause hearing.
