Alonso Bracey, a former basketball coach at Barton Elementary School in Chicago, Illinois, who was convicted in February of sexually abusing five boys between the ages of 11 and 13 has won a delay in his formal sentencing.

Bracey was scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.
However his attorney asked for a new trial, claiming the jury was pressured to reach a quick verdict at his trial in February when he was found guilty of raping three boys and sexually assaulting two others.
Had Bracey’s sentencing gone forward on Monday he would have likely been sentenced to life in prison based on both criminal statute and new sentencing guidelines that apply to the abuse of more than one child.
The judge expressed doubt the jury rushed to a quick verdict in its five hour long deliberations but expressed a desire to avoid an appeal issue.
The court will deal with the motion for a new trial in late May.
