In almost all cases I assume any person being arrested for possessing child pornography to be guilty until proven innocent, but this case is different. Unlike a former Scarsdale 2nd grade Fox Meadow Elementary School teacher who was arrested for corresponding online with an undercover police officer pretending to be a child, Mr. Julier was not and should not be treated as if he were a child predator. Even reporters who browsed websites and downloaded child pornography have been arrested for exactly the same acts as Mr. Julier, as the federal agents claimed in their criminal complaint.

I was a Scarsdale High School student between 1991 and 1995, and I first got to know Mr. Julier when I worked on my mother’s car in 1992. Mr. Julier has been the High School Auto Shop teacher for over twenty years, and he taught my older brother Auto Mechanics as well. Even after I graduated Scarsdale High School (he attended my High School graduation party) I remained in contact with Mr. Julier, speaking with him over the phone about every six to twelve months. Mr. Julier was one of my personal references for my college application and (I recall) a professional reference as well.

Mr. Julier was the teacher I was closest to in High School, and (starting when I was 15 years old) I spent hundreds of hours during and after school with him (much of the time alone) inside the Auto Shop with him working on cars, including working by his side underneath a car. Not once did Mr. Julier express any physical or verbal gesture or contact indicating interest in me when I was a minor, and I never heard gossip from students about Mr. Julier making any inappropriate physical or verbal gestures to other students. On occasion, Mr. Julier offered to drive me home from school in his car, and he never made any physical or verbal gestures then.

It saddens me that Mr. Julier’s two decades of personal dedication to teaching high school students auto mechanics, photography, architectural drawing, ceramics, and other classes, along with helping out Scarsdale High School students and fellow staff with car-emergencies, will likely be tarnished by this arrest. Based on my personal knowledge of Mr. Julier as a person, I was in shock and could not believe that Mr. Julier was arrested for these types of actions.
