(08/14/08 – Initial BBT Report)

James Barany, 37, former band director at Overfelt High School and Mount Pleasant High School in Santa Clara County, California has been arrested in an Internet sex sting.

Allegedly Barany initiated a chat room conversation with a detective that he believed to be a 13 year-old girl and thereafter attempted to solicit lewd acts.

It is further alleged that Barany agreed to meet with the girl at a location in Santa Cruz.

Following Barany’s arrest, detectives served a search warrant at his residence and seized items that might be used as evidence.

Reportedly Barany was placed on administrative leave following his arrest and subsequently resigned from the school system where he had been employed for a period of three years.

Following his arrest Barany was released on bond.

08/15/08 – Court Appearance

James Barany appeared in court Friday morning, but did not enter a plea. He did however ask for time to hire his own attorney.

The judge instructed Barany to not have contact with girls younger than 18, either in person or online.

Barany remains free on $25,000 bail.

09/03/08 – Court Appearance

James Barany made a court appearance today and entered a not guilty plea.

His next court date is set for November 3rd.

Barany remains free on bond.

10/31/08 – Guilty Plea

James Barany has pleaded guilty to a felony count of communicating with a person believed to be a minor for the purpose of arranging a sexual encounter.

Sentencing is set for December.

James Barany will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

12/29/08 – Sentencing

Today James Barany was sentenced to 6 months in jail to be followed by five years probation.

Reportedly Barany will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Page Darren White, 40, a former teacher at Travis High School in Austin, Texas has pleaded guilty to child pornography and improper photography charges.

White was arrested in December, 2006 after he was seen following young women at the mall with a camera.

Austin Police say that White had at least 75 images of child pornography on his home computer, many of them involving children under the age of 12.

Police say they also discovered several dozen videos of young women’s behinds on White’s video camera, most of which appeared to have been taken without the women’s knowledge as well as several files titled with the names of female Travis High School students and classes.

In the wake of his guilty plea, White was sentenced to 15 years of probation.

White has already given up his teaching certificate.

As part of his plea deal, he must also register as a sex offender.

Damon M. Williams, 26, a choir teacher at Rabouin High School in New Orleans, Louisiana has been arrested after a 17-year-old male student allegedly received an obscene cell phone photo sent from the teacher’s phone.

Williams, who faces an obscenity charge, was initially held in the Orleans Parish jail on $20,000 bond.

It is alleged that the student “received a picture message of a penis” to his cell phone and that the picture came from Williams’ phone.

The boy that allegedly received the message contacted an adult relative who came to the school. The boy allegedly showed the picture to a police detective on the day that Williams was arrested.

Williams, reportedly a very popular teacher who has been with the school district for two years, has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the conclusion of the investigation.

12/28/08 – District Attorney Declines To Prosecute

The Orleans Parish district attorney’s office has declined to press obscenity charges against a popular high school choir director after concluding that evidence against the educator didn’t meet the legal definition of the crime.
