James Barany, 37, former band director at Overfelt High School and Mount Pleasant High School in Santa Clara County, California has been arrested in an Internet sex sting.

Allegedly Barany initiated a chat room conversation with a detective that he believed to be a 13 year-old girl and thereafter attempted to solicit lewd acts.
It is further alleged that Barany agreed to meet with the girl at a location in Santa Cruz.
Following Barany’s arrest, detectives served a search warrant at his residence and seized items that might be used as evidence.
Reportedly Barany was placed on administrative leave following his arrest and subsequently resigned from the school system where he had been employed for a period of three years.
Following his arrest Barany was released on bond.
08/15/08 – Court Appearance
James Barany appeared in court Friday morning, but did not enter a plea. He did however ask for time to hire his own attorney.
The judge instructed Barany to not have contact with girls younger than 18, either in person or online.
Barany remains free on $25,000 bail.
09/03/08 – Court Appearance
James Barany made a court appearance today and entered a not guilty plea.
His next court date is set for November 3rd.
Barany remains free on bond.
10/31/08 – Guilty Plea
James Barany has pleaded guilty to a felony count of communicating with a person believed to be a minor for the purpose of arranging a sexual encounter.
Sentencing is set for December.
James Barany will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
12/29/08 – Sentencing
Today James Barany was sentenced to 6 months in jail to be followed by five years probation.
Reportedly Barany will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
