Michael P. Widger, 36, of Erie, Pennsylvania a teacher at Grandview Elementary School has been arrested and charged with possessing child pornography after police allegedly found 55 images on the computer he used at school.

Widger allegedly admitted to police that he would sometimes use the school computer for personal purposes.

Reportedly when police asked him why he did an Internet search for the terms “transgender” and “she-male,” Widger allegedly told investigators that a transgender parent was coming to the school for a meeting and he wanted to send a joke about it to other faculty members.

Widger was first suspended and then fired by the school system on the basis of violating the school district’s computer-use policy. Reportedly school administrator’s action in this regard was not related to the criminal charges against Widger.

Renee Smith, 37, a former special education teacher at Springfield High School, in Springfield Township, Ohio who pleaded guilty last month to charges of sexual battery of one male student and furnishing drugs to him and another male student has been sentenced.

Smith has been sentenced to two years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender for life.

Smith whose teacher’s license has already been revoked pleaded guilty to giving drugs to two boys and having a two-year sexual relationship with a now 17-year-old boy.

Christine Marie Johanson, 36, a former teacher’s assistant at Hudson Park Elementary School has been sentenced in Cowlitz County, Washington for the third-degree rape of a 15-year-old male student at Rainier Junior/Senior High School in Rainier, Washington.

Johanson was sentenced to six months in jail on her guilty plea last month to the Cowlitz County charges. Johanson is facing three additional counts of third-degree rape of the same 15-year-old boy in Columbia County, Oregon and is expected to plead guilty to those charges on Friday.

Johanson admitted she had sexual relations with the boy for five months, relations that stretched across two states, while she worked at Hudson Park Elementary School in Rainier. At her sentencing she said, “‘I’m so sorry for everything I’ve put everyone through. I know I’ve caused pain, stress and anger because of my choices. I want the court to know, and I need everyone to know, that the poor choices I made were terrible mistakes that I wish I could truly undo.“.

The victim’s mother spoke at Johanson’s sentencing and spoke of the pain her family is going through, saying, “I can’t even go to the gas station without somebody saying something to me about how dare I do this to this person. Well, you know what? How dare this person do this to me?“.

The victim’s mother also said her son was forced to switch schools owing to the Johanson case, “He can no longer be in football. He no longer gets to go to the prom and everything else because we had to put him in an alternative school. There’s been a lot of things he had to give up because of this.”

Johanson was originally charged with 10 counts of third-degree rape, two counts of third-degree sodomy, 12 counts of second-degree sexual abuse and two counts of furnishing liquor to a minor. It was alleged that Johanson forced the boy to have sex with her, repeatedly between March and August, 2006.

Update 8/31/07:

Christine Marie Johanson today pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in Columbia County for her sexual affair with the same 15-year-old male victim above.

The Columbia County prosecutor is seeking a 30 month prison sentence for Johanson because the presumptive, or standard, range for a fourth conviction of third-degree rape is 25 to 30 months.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 3rd.
